An emergency room fire was extinguished without injury Wednesday morning by staff members at Huntington Hospital, a fire official said.

Huntington Fire Department Assistant Chief Robert Berry said the fire was reported just before 5 a.m. and about a dozen volunteers with two trucks responded under the direction of Chief Ken Cochrane. No injuries were reported, Berry said.

Berry said the fire, which involved ignited linens and surgical pads, was confined to one emergency room bay and was promptly extinguished by hospital staff. Firefighters used four exhaust fans to vent the room in the aftermath, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Suffolk County police Arson Squad and the Town of Huntington Fire Marshal, Berry said.

It was not immediately clear if the fire's cause is being considered suspicious.
