Starting in middle grades, a faculty adviser trains selected students to act as peer mediators in settling disputes between classmates who agree to arbitration. Also, the district sponsors two annual Awareness Weekends for teens, who stay overnight at the high school to share personal experiences and listen to motivational speakers, including recovered drug addicts.
A bilingual drug counselor works with the Island's biggest concentration of Spanish-speaking students. Also, the district distributes drug-awareness materials to students and holds anti-tobacco sessions after classes.

Two student-assistance counselors help struggling students and their families in grades 6 to 8. The aim is to address problems before they get out of hand in the later grades. Also, the district recently held its second night meeting to inform parents about teenage heroin use.
