Southold Town police and passersby played cowboy Thursday morning, rounding up two miniature horses that had escaped from a Peconic residence, according to a department release.

Police responded to a caretaker's call at about 5 a.m. that the two horses had gotten loose at 3590 S. Harbor Lane. After a search, police found the horses near the intersection of Main Bayview and Grange roads.

Police responded to a caretaker's call at about 5 a.m. that the two horses had gotten loose at 3590 S. Harbor Lane. After a search, police found the horses near the intersection of Main Bayview and Grange roads.

Police followed the two horses north about a half-mile toward Route 25. Along with two motorists, police said they were able to corral the horses with their vehicles at the intersection of Route 25 and Jasmine Lane.

The caretaker was then able to return the horses to the property, police said.
