Lakeland firefighters and the Town of Islip's hazardous material team evacuated a Ronkonkoma house Sunday afternoon, after the homeowners reported a ruptured gas tank leaking 200 gallons of home heating oil.

Capt. Robert DeRosso of the Lakeland Fire Department said firefighters determined the oil was not combustible at the home at 197 Springdale Drive, but the family was told not to stay in the house until the oil was removed.

DeRosso, said the leak which covered the home's basement, posed no threat to neighbors, and the family had plans to hire a contractor to clean the spill. The department was on scene for more than an hour after receiving the 3:30 p.m. call to respond, he said.
