Two horses were rescued in Center Moriches after a complaint that they were emaciated, said the Suffolk Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

"They were very thin," Roy Gross, SPCA chief, said Thursday. "They were in a paddock. They had no feed or hay."

The two horses, one a thoroughbred, were given up Monday by their owner, Gross said. Their ribs and haunches stuck out in photos released by the SPCA.

There is at least one other horse on the property and the investigation continues into its care, the chief said.

The horses are being fostered but need veterinary care and donations, Gross said.

They also need permanent homes, he said. Anyone interested in helping may call the SPCA at 631-382-7722.
