Potters at their wheels, painters swirling on canvas, woodcarvers chiseling away - if you've ever wondered how Long Island artists work, you can get a peek into their world this weekend.

The second annual Artists Studio and Gallery Tour is a two-day event that sends visitors on a self-guided tour through 18 private studios and public galleries from East Moriches to East Quogue.

Along the way, visitors will see artists working on current projects - painting, sculpture, mixed media - all in various stages of completion.

"It is a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes what goes on in the art community that strives out here," says Robert Deets, managing director of Galerie BelAge in Westhampton, which will have four artists demonstrating crafts such as photography and printmaking.

What to expect

The two-day tour is self-guided, which means visitors can roam among the studios and galleries at their own pace, chatting with the artists or lingering a while to appreciate the work as it evolves.

"It is an eye-opener as to what goes on inside the artist's mind," says Candyce Brokaw, an artist and co-coordinator. "Ask the artist what he or she was thinking when they put it on the canvas."

Kickoff reception

Ticketholders are invited to a 5-7 p.m. meet-and-greet reception Friday at the Full Moon Arts Center, which will offer food, drinks and live music. At least one piece from each artist will be on display.

Ticket sales benefit community-based mental health center Family Counseling Services, as will a percentage of the purchase price of art sold Friday night.
