Jarrett tosses perfect game for Northport
Molly Jarrett came within one out of perfection last season. On Thursday, she finally got that perfect ending.
Jarrett tossed a seven-inning perfect game with 17 strikeouts in a 10-0 win over Central Islip in League II. It was the first no-hitter for the senior pitcher, who is in her fifth year on varsity. The 17 strikeouts were two shy of tying her career-high.
It was the first perfect game thrown in Suffolk County this season.
"She just threw her pitches and hit all her spots," Northport coach Krystle Canino said. "They couldn't get the bat on the ball."
It was the second shutout of the season for Jarrett, who improved to 6-5 on the season while playing in arguably the deepest league in Suffolk County.
The perfect game couldn’t have come at a better time for Northport, which now needs to win two of its final three games to finish with 10 wins and qualify for the playoffs. The Tigers improved to 8-8 and will wrap up their season with tough games against Commack, Lindenhurst and West Islip.
Erin Joyce hit a bases clearing double to ignite a two-out, seven-run rally in the top of the seventh inning. Bree Halpin went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs.
Jarrett, who had shoulder surgery in January to repair a partial tear of her labrum in her pitching arm, nearly tossed a perfect game last season but an error with two outs in the seventh inning cost her. This time, everything was just perfect.
"It was exciting because she came really close last year,” Canino said. “It was a goal of Molly’s so it was exciting to be apart of her first perfect game. As a team, hopefully it will get us pumped up for our next three games.”
