A zoning change necessary to allow a proposed affordable housing development in Kings Park was approved Wednesday night by the Smithtown Town Planning Board.

With virtually no discussion, the planning board approved a change to permit construction of 36 garden apartments on the 3.1-acre parcel on Indian Head Road. The property currently is zoned for town houses.

The proposal now will go to the Town Board, which would have to approve the zoning change before the apartment complex could be built.

The development has drawn no public opposition.

Developers have said the apartments are designed for young people and others who cannot afford to buy a home on Long Island.
