Mets' Wright NL player of month for June

David Wright's month of July got off to a great start, what with the announcement Sunday that he was elected as the starting third baseman for the National League in the All-Star Game. But it will be hard for his July to be better than his June, when Wright was busting out all over.

He was officially named National League player of the month for June Tuesday, acknowledgment for his .404 average and 29 runs batted in. It was the second time Wright has been player of the month, and the first since June 2006. It was the first time in Mets history that any player hit at least .400 and had at least 25 RBIs.

"We had a good month as a team and when you have a good collection of guys who went out there and had the kind of month that they had, it makes it a lot of fun to come to the ballpark," he said before he went 1-for-3 in the Mets' 3-0 victory over the Reds last night at Citi Field. "With Jose [Reyes] and Angel [Pagan] and the way those guys have been getting on base, it makes our jobs in the middle of the lineup a lot easier.

"I never really looked at numbers as a success/failure type of grade. I think that it's a lot more fun coming to the ballpark when we're playing good baseball," Wright said, adding that batting coach Howard Johnson and manager Jerry Manuel gave him helpful advice.

Manuel said he did not plan to pursue any dialogue with the league over the overturned third-strike call against the Reds' Scott Rolen on Monday night that resulted in the manager's ejection. "Once it's done, I move on," he said.
