Montauk Lighthouse added to landmark list
The Montauk Lighthouse is officially a National Historic Landmark, one of 13 added to the 2,500 other special places on that list on Monday night via the signature of U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.
Salazar noted that the 110-foot tall lighthouse was “the most important for the nation’s foreign trade during the first eight decades of the United States lighthouse service.”

Among the other new landmarks were the USS Slater in Albany — described as a rare example of the mass-produced warships that provided convoy protection in World War II — and the Deer Medicine Rocks in Montana, which contain many Native American rock carvings, including a depiction of the battle of Little Big Horn.
