Former New York Knick John Starks and State Sen. Dean Skelos will participate in Cablevision’s 2011 Knicks Read to Achieve summer reading event Monday.

The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. in the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library, 60 Verona Place in Valley Stream.

The program aims to encourage reading and comprehension during the summer months and use incentives to motivate students to reach reading goals.

Starks and Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) will each read excerpts from the children’s book “Calvin Coconut: Trouble Magnet” by Graham Salisbury, after which children will participate in a quiz about the book and a raffle.

Space for the event is limited. To register, call the library by Friday at 516-825-6422.

The Knicks Read to Achieve, at powertolearn.com, is a partnership between the Knicks and Cablevision’s Power to Learn education initiative. Cablevision also owns Newsday.
