Suffolk to boost July 4th weekend patrols
Suffolk police are boosting patrol levels this weekend to target drunken drivers and boaters, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer said.
In addition to more Suffolk highway and marine patrol teams, extra 911 operators will be on duty.
“Suffolk police will be working around the clock to keep the roadways and waterways safe from DWI and [boating while intoxicated] offenders,” Dormer said in a news release. “We want the message to be clear that if someone drinks while operating a vehicle or boat, they will be arrested.”
Illegal fireworks will be targeted, too, with the help of plainclothes officers and canine units.
A similar initiative will be conducted this weekend in Nassau.
During Memorial Day weekend, Nassau and Suffolk police made 112 DWI arrests, including 44 in Suffolk.
