Wantagh water company site hearings delayed

Public hearings about two development proposals for a water company site on DeMott Avenue in Wantagh have been postponed to Aug. 10.

Aqua New York Inc., a nongovernmental water company, has two applications pending before the Town of Hempstead’s board of appeals for the site just west of the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway and east of Temple Drive. The site plans, initially scheduled for public hearings Wednesday, June 29, and July 27, were rescheduled in response to requests by the Wantagh Seaford Homeowners Association.

The first application by Aqua is for construction of two one-floor buildings to house a new well and water treatment and purification equipment. A second application calls for a 150-foot-tall water tower, which the company said is needed to address persistent low-water-pressure problems in the area.

Aqua has already received state Public Service Commission approval for the tower, but it is up to the town board of appeals to make the final decision about whether the projects go forward.

Aqua, the Wantagh Seaford Homeowners Association and the Wantagh Civic Association have scheduled a meeting to discuss the plans for 7 p.m. July 12 in the Wantagh High School auditorium, 3297 Beltagh Ave.
