The Sept. 11 memorial in lower Manhattan has made it through Irene after fears that the storm could soak the World Trade Center site.
National September 11 Memorial & Museum Director Joe Daniels said Sunday that there wasn’t any significant flooding, and pieces of steel and other artifacts gathered for a planned museum are safe and dry.
Daniels says he was especially concerned about the 225 trees on the memorial plaza, but they weathered the storm in good shape.
The trade center site is in the low-lying southern tip of Manhattan. The area was ordered evacuated for fear that Irene’s storm surge could overrun it.
The memorial is scheduled to open next month on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. The museum is to open next year.
