The first name of a man killed in the 9/11 attacks is misspelled in the new National September 11 Memorial, but officials said a fix is in the works.
Janice Hart, 53, of West Hempstead, said she was upset when she came across the name of her brother Jeffrey Schreier on the bronze monument on Sunday, at the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Schreier's first name was misspelled "Jeffery."
Hart soon departed for home.
"I guess it put a damper on things for me. It [the memorial] is all we have," Hart said Sunday evening. Her brother's remains have never been found.
Memorial spokesman Michael Frazier attributed the mistake to a data-entry error, and said architects and contractors have been contacted to make a correction.
"We are extremely sorry for the pain this mistake has caused Jeffrey's family," Frazier said in a statement Monday.
Frazier said the memorial took pains to verify that names were spelled correctly. He said staff received the correct spelling of Schreier's name from the New York City medical examiner's office. Memorial staff then verified the name correctly with Schreier's wife, but misspelled the name when entering it into a database.
Hart said Schreier, 48, of Brooklyn, had worked in the mailroom at Cantor Fitzgerald. "He would have been one of the first in the office," she said. "I think of him every day."
