Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo Tuesday unveiled an official state flag to commemorate the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The flag will be flown at the State Capitol next week and at the entrance to the World Trade Center. Sales of the flag will help fund the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, which opens on the 10th anniversary of the attacks at the World Trade Center.

"The flag that is being unveiled today is beautiful and it is powerful, it has all the symbols that tell the full story," Cuomo said at a news conference.

The flag includes two rectangles with the numbers 9 and 11 within a pentagon on a blue background to represent the Twin Towers and Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The victims of United Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, Pa., are represented by 40 yellow stars. The words "We Remember" lie beneath the symbols.

"Just as the American flag instilled and continues to instill people with hope and pride after Sept. 11, this 9/11 flag . . . will remind people of the sense of unity that we all felt in the aftermath," said Joe Daniels, president of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

New Yorkers have the obligation to remember and honor those who were lost and to teach the lessons of that day to younger generations, Cuomo said.
