Inspired by a small service at St. Peter's
As people headed to the subway at 53rd Street and Lexington Avenue late Sunday, they drifted toward the music: the soft tones of a xylophone and piano. It was a church -- in the basement of the Citibank building -- which was just beginning a service commemorating the 10th anniversary of the attacks, hours after the commemoration at Ground Zero had ended.
"I have changed. I imagine we all have. The world has," the Rev. Kaji Spellman told the small gathering at Saint Peter's.
Spellman told the small, eclectic group, many of whom seemed to stumble on the service by happenstance, that she was a campaign worker that day, focused entirely on Primary Day even after the first plane hit the World Trade Center. Now, she said, she regretted that initial focus, encouraging attendees to instead concentrate on forgiveness and on how the world has changed.
