At the corner of Church and Warren streets, Janice Hart of West Hempstead was among the family members of 9/11 victims filing through a checkpoint toward the monument. A few carried American flags or cameras. Hart was there to grieve for her brother Jeffrey Schreier, 48, of Brooklyn, who worked in the mailroom at Cantor Fitzgerald. "He would have been one of the first in the office" that morning, she said.

"I think of him every day," she added.

Hart said her parents had survived the Holocaust, but their families were lost among the six million dead. "So we've had a lot of loss in our family," she said.
