$100G grant to Watt Fuel Cell for research
A Port Washington company has received a six-month $100,000 state grant for further research on the manufacturing of fuel cells to generate electricity for civilian and military uses.
Watt Fuel Cell Corp., a developer of solid oxide fuel cell systems, said Tuesday the grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority will pay to assess the energy savings associated with the company’s proprietary process for manufacturing fuel cells.
The company says its single-step process enables it to produce reliable, high-quality components on a mass scale and at a lower cost than industry competitors.
Watt, which is private and was incorporated in 2011 by its president, Caine Finnerty, is nearing the start of its first production of components and expects to make announcements of production partnerships early next year, a spokeswoman said.
The fuel cells are intended primarily for portable use such as for boats or recreational vehicles, using a variety of fuels, including propane and, for the military, jet fuel.
