Two Long Island workplaces, a bank branch and the accounting office of a supply chain and logistics service company, filed formal notices this week telling state labor officials they plan to lay off workers.
UTi Inc., a supply chain service based in Long Beach, Calif., will lay off 20 workers from its U.S. accounting branch at 48 South Service Rd., Melville, the notice said. The dismissal date is set for Sept. 30, and the reason given is "plant closing."
UTi has offices near airports around the world, including locations close to Kennedy and Newark Liberty International airports, and a UTi space in Queens listed as an Israel Support Office, according to the company's website.
The notice filed with the labor department said the office had 20 employees -- the number that will be laid off. However, Frank Lavoratore, the finance controller for UTi in Melville, said that while the office will be closing, not every employee will be let go. He said he could not comment and did not answer further questions.
The other layoff is at the Capital One branch at 9025 Main Rd. in Mattituck. The bank told the state it would dismiss six workers, effective Oct. 2. Capital One did not respond to requests for comment.
The notices were made public by the state Department of Labor's office of dislocated worker programs.
