Unions protest A&P's proposed contract changes

Lawyers for the unions representing workers at A&P-owned supermarkets will be in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in White Plains on Monday morning to protest proposed modifications of the employees' collective bargaining agreements. The protests relate to bumping rights and severance pay, the lawyers' filing said.
The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. filed for Chapter 11 protection last month and announced that it was closing 25 stores, including five Pathmark and Waldbaum's locations on Long Island, and selling 120 others. The Montvale, N.J.-based operator said that additional stores could be sold as it works its way through bankruptcy court.
Employees' unions have expressed concern over the potential loss of job security based on seniority and a cut in severance benefits.
