Aceto Corp. has begun selling a generic drug to treat ear infections.

The Port Washington-based manufacturer of drugs and chemicals recently launched Fluocinolone Acetonide OTIC Oil 0.01%, a generic version of DermOtic from drugmaker Hill Dermaceuticals Inc. The oils are used for chronic eczematous external otitis, an inflammation of the ear canal caused by a bacterial infection.

The product will be handled by the company’s Rising Pharmaceuticals Inc. subsidiary in New Jersey, officials said earlier this month.

U.S. sales of existing versions of the drug were $30 million in the 12 months ended July 31, according to the health care research firm IMS Health.
