In the first step of a planned commercial foray into the veterinary medicine supply market, Lake Success-based Aceto Corp. said Tuesday that it has gotten federal agency approval to import vaccine for dogs.

The company will sell the vaccine to its distributors for sale in the U.S. beginning early next year.

"The process to get the USDA to issue a permit for Aceto to import the 4 in 1 vaccine was extremely rigorous and took far longer than had been anticipated," Albert Eilender, chief executive of Aceto, said in a news release Tuesday.

"We view this approval as a first step towards our long term plan to develop and market a line of veterinary products," the CEO said.

Canine vaccines usually are administered in a single combination shot to prevent distemper, adenoviruses, parainfluenza and parvovirus.

Aceto is a global supplier of pharmaceuticals and chemicals.
