A Longwood High School senior has placed first in a statewide competition for an agricultural scholarship.

The Long Island Farm Bureau announced that Jessica Anson of Yaphank received the $1,500 scholarship from the New York Farm Bureau. She has applied to the Cornell University Agricultural Science program for the fall.

Her family has a retail nursery business that specializes in annuals, perennials and hanging baskets, and she has been active in the business for several years, according to the LI Farm Bureau, which quoted Sandra Prokop, the NYFB Foundation for Agricultural Education managing director, as saying the competition for the scholarship was fierce.
