Altice USA and one of its 24-hour news channels, i24NEWS, have launched a program where local high school students discuss current events and issues, officials announced Tuesday.

The Bethpage-based owner of the Optimum cable television and internet service said the new program, Altice Connects Global Voices, will give students in the metropolitan area the opportunity to produce videos and social media content on current events.

As part of the program, students from Lawrence High School in Cedarhurst recently toured the i24NEWS studios in Manhattan’s Times Square, produced short videos and conducted interviews.

“Through [the program], high school students will be exposed to a variety of perspectives as they form their own opinions on current events and actively engage in dialogue on global issues with i24NEWS,” said Lee Schroeder, senior vice president of government and community affairs.

i24News, created in Israel by Altice NV founder Patrick Drahi and recently expanded to the United States, is available locally on Optimum Channel 102. Altice N.V. of the Netherlands owns Altice USA, which owns 25 percent of the Newsday Media Group.
