Amneal to buy four drugs from a rival

Amneal Pharmaceuticals LLC announced Monday that it plans to buy four generic drugs from a competitor for an undisclosed amount.

Amneal, which has factories in Hauppauge and South Yaphank, said the four products are owned by Actavis Inc. of Parsippany, N.J. Earlier this year, Actavis announced plans to purchase Irish drugmaker Warner Chilcott PLC.

The deal witih Bridgewater, N.J.-based Amneal settles charges from the Federal Trade Commission that Actavis' purchase of Warner for $8.5 billion is "uncompetitive."

Of the four drugs, Zenchent Fe is already on the market and used for birth control. Another birth control pill and one for osteoporosis are awaiting approval from the federal Food and Drug Administration.

A third birth control drug has been approved but is not being sold.
