Police and other professionals are gathering in Hauppauge this week for an annual conference on vehicle theft, insurance fraud and related automotive crimes, sponsored by the Northeast chapter of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators.

The three-day event at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Hauppauge began Tuesday.

Scheduled speakers include local government prosecutors, and officials from the NYPD, National Insurance Crime Bureau, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and major vehicle manufacturers, LoJack, Zipcar and Carfax, according to a seminar agenda on the association's website.

Organizers say attendees are expected from about 25 law enforcement agencies, mostly along the East Coast and in Canada.
