BAE Systems’ Information and Electronic Systems Integration unit in Greenlawn has been awarded a contract worth up to $26.1 million for transponders and transponder upgrade kits, the Department of Defense announced Monday.

Under the contract, 85 percent of the work (worth as much as $22.2 million) would be done in Greenlawn, with the remainder done in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Transponders are used in land vehicles, surface ships and aircraft to electronically question potentially hostile vehicles as to whether they are friend or foe.

The transponders in the contract also would send electronic identification to friendly forces.

The devicess will be installed on various models of F/A-18 Hornet aircraft. The versatile aircraft can be based on aircraft carriers and can carry air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons as well as electronic warfare gear.

The contract, through the Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland, calls for delivery of up to 90 interrogator transponders and up to 250 upgrade kits for the U.S. Navy and the governments of Finland and Switzerland.

Work is expected to be completed in April 2018.
