Bank of America offers help to modify mortgages

For the second time in a month, Bank of America will hold loan modification workshops on Long Island for borrowers with financial hardships.

That’s because late last month, its three-day marathon in Uniondale was cut short by Tropical Storm Irene.

Borrowers can bring financial documents Friday and Saturday to the Long Island Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 101 James Doolittle Blvd. in Uniondale. From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., they can try to get lower interest rates, scan in documents and talk to nonprofit housing counselors, who can stay with borrowers as they meet with bank representatives.

It’s a chance to review files, persuade the bank to reconsider denials on modifications or to start the process of lowering monthly payments.

Borrowers should expect the spend two to three hours there. Walk-ins are welcome, but registrations are encouraged. Go to bankofamerica.com/homeownerevent or call the toll free 855-201-7426.

Some homeowners could even get temporary loan term changes right there, a bank spokeswoman said, but all the documents required must be in the file. Those missing documents at the event can get them and return. The list of documents is on the website.
