Seven Long Island hospitals earned national honors for specialty care and six ranked among the Top 10 hospitals in New York State, U.S. News & World Report announced Tuesday.

The media company named NYU Langone Health's hospitals, which include NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island in Mineola, as No. 3 in the nation and No. 1 in the state.

Among hospitals ranked individually, the highest ranking Long Island facility was Northwell Health’s North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, at No. 5 in the state. The New Hyde Park-based health system had three other hospitals named among the best in New York: Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park (No. 7), Huntington Hospital (No. 10) and South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore (No. 15). In addition, U.S. News last month ranked the system’s Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park second in the state.

The other Long Island hospitals that ranked among New York State’s top facilities were Catholic Health’s St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center in Roslyn (No. 6) and Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip (No. 26), Stony Brook University Hospital (No. 9) and Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside (No. 28).

“We've got some fantastic places on Long Island to get health care,” Michael Dowling, Northwell’s president and CEO, said in an interview. But, he said, “you never should be completely satisfied, you've always got to keep raising the bar and get better and better.”

This is the second year Manhattan-based NYU Langone Health has reported data jointly for its Manhattan, Brooklyn and Nassau County hospitals in the U.S. News report. In 2020, the facility then known as NYU Winthrop Hospital ranked fifth in the New York metropolitan area.

Reporting data together for all the system’s hospitals helps ensure “that care is the same no matter where in the NYU Langone health system our patients go to get care,” said Dr. Joseph Greco, senior vice president and chief of hospital operations at NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island.

In the report released Tuesday, U.S. News ranked hospitals in 15 specialties.

The NYU Langone hospitals ranked No. 1 in the nation in neurology and neurosurgery and No. 3 for geriatrics. They also won national honors for 12 other specialties: cancer (No. 19), cardiology and heart surgery (No. 5), diabetes and endocrinology (No. 3), ear nose and throat (No. 26), gastroenterology and GI surgery (No. 5), obstetrics and gynecology (No. 11), orthopedics (No. 4), psychiatry (No. 10), pulmonology and lung surgery (No. 4), rehabilitation (No. 7), rheumatology (No. 7) and urology (No. 10).

North Shore was ranked nationally for 11 specialties: cancer (No. 41), cardiology and heart surgery (No. 16), diabetes and endocrinology (No. 38), ear nose and throat (No. 41), gastroenterology and GI surgery (No. 30), geriatrics (No. 24), neurology and neurosurgery (No. 45), obstetrics and gynecology (No. 42), orthopedics (No. 30), pulmonology and lung surgery (No. 14) and urology (No. 25).

Among Northwell’s other hospitals, Long Island Jewish ranked No. 7 in the nation for obstetrics and gynecology, and it also was honored for ear nose and throat (No. 46), geriatrics (No. 40), neurology and neurosurgery (No. 17), pulmonology and lung surgery (No. 41), and urology (No. 20). Huntington Hospital ranked 45th in the United States for pulmonology and lung surgery, and Glen Cove Hospital was named 47th best in the nation for rehabilitation.

St. Francis, part of Rockville Centre-based Catholic Health, won national honors for cardiology and heart surgery (No. 29), gastroenterology and GI surgery (No. 27), geriatrics (No. 36), neurology and neurosurgery (No. 30) and orthopedics (No. 38). The health system is adding St. Francis-affiliated centers dedicated to diagnosing and treating chest pain at its other hospitals, said Dr. Jason Golbin, executive vice president and chief medical officer at Catholic Health. “We felt that it's critical that we take that cardiology expertise and share it and spread it through the organization,” Golbin said.

Stony Brook was ranked No. 41 in the country for urology and No. 50 for diabetes and endocrinology.

This is the 33rd edition of U.S. News’ Best Hospitals list. The media company analyzes data on survival rates, nurse staffing, patient ratings and surveys of physicians, among other factors.

The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota was named the country’s top hospital, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles was second on the list.

No individual Long Island hospital made the top 20 overall national list. In Manhattan, New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell ranked No. 7 overall in the nation, and Mount Sinai Hospital was named No. 16.
