After nearly four hours of scouring the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove, Mate Sebestyen sat down to rest his legs. This was his initiation to Black Friday, made possible by the fact he had the day off from his job managing an import business.
“I'm pretty much done for today, for now,” said Sebestyen, 48, of Coram. “All I did was Christmas shopping.”
Well, not quite all. He also bought a set of speakers for his desktop computer that were marked down to $29 from $49. When he arrived at noon with his wife and two children, some stores were already ending early bird sales. If he comes again next year, he said he'll show up earlier. But, he added, “it won't be 4 o'clock in the morning.”
