Second Burlington at Green Acres in former Kohl's approved by Hempstead IDA

Off-price retailer Burlington plans to open a store at Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, less than a mile from its existing store at an adjacent shopping center.

The mall and the shopping center are owned by The Macerich Company, a Santa Monica, California-based real estate trust. The Town of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency announced Tuesday that it had approved a sublease for the second Burlington.

After executing the lease, Burlington will employ 10 full-time, 55 part-time and 62 seasonal workers in the nearly 93,000-square-foot space, according to IDA documents.

A Burlington in the adjacent Green Acres Commons outdoor shopping center opened in 2016.

"This new lease with Burlington is evidence of Green Acres' attractiveness to both consumers and retailers, justifying the IDA's continued investment in these shopper centers," said Fred Parola, chief executive of the Hempstead IDA, in a news release.

The IDA holds title to the mall and shopping center because the properties operate under payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreements, or PILOTs, that the agency initially approved in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Macerich is considered to be leasing the properties and must get the IDA's approval for all tenants' subleases until the tax-break deal ends.

A Burlington spokeswoman said there is no additional information available about the new location.

The new Burlington location will take over a space formerly occupied by Kohl's, which closed in 2019, said a spokesperson for Macerich. The entrance will be part of an area at the mall undergoing a multi-million dollar redevelopment.
