Burlington will open its 18th Long Island store in early March, the off-price retailer said Tuesday.

The store, which will be located at 834 Walt Whitman Rd. in the Melville Mall, will replace Macy’s Backstage outlet that closed in the shopping center in March, Newsday previously reported

A company spokesperson said an opening date would be announced as it draws closer.

The store will mark the chain's 74th in the state. The retailer's 17 stores on Long Island include locations in Valley Stream, Farmingville and Riverhead, according to Burlington's online store locator.

The shopping center, owned by Federal Realty Investment Trust in North Bethesda, Maryland, is anchored by Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace and Dick's Sporting Goods.

Officials with Federal Realty did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, a retail analysis firm based in Manhattan, said retail brands like Burlington, which offer lower prices, have seen increased demand as consumers look to cut back on spending amid an economy defined by higher costs.

"The value apparel sector is seeing strong growth, largely because more consumers are migrating to lower price retailers to try and make their dollars stretch further," Saunders said in an emailed response to Newsday. "Burlington is in the off-price space, and it has a strength in that it offers brands for less.

"Given the market is robust, they are opening more stores to reach more customers," he said.

Burlington’s new 32,314-square-foot space in Melville, located along Route 110, will be about 3 miles south of an existing Burlington store that opened in 2023 at the Huntington Commons shopping center

The Burlington Township, New Jersey-based retailer said in a Tuesday announcement that the new store would feature a “reimagined store design” with wider, more organized aisles and more noticeable signage to help customers navigate the shop.

More than half of Burlington Stores Inc.'s 1,200 stores have undergone similar upgrades, and its remaining stores will be redesigned by the end of 2026, the company said.
