Business week ahead, October 18-22
KEY EVENT: The state Labor Department on Thursday releases jobs created on Long Island in September. In August, Long Island employers created 36,000 new jobs compared with August 2020, the lowest year-over-year amount in five months. The national employment report for September, released earlier this month, showed a significant slowdown in hiring as fears over the COVID-19 delta variant put a chill on hiring.
MONDAY: The National Association of Home Builders releases its October economic optimism survey. Also, September industrial production from the Commerce Department.
TUESDAY: September housing starts from the Commerce Department. Earnings: Bank of New York Mellon, Johnson & Johnson, Netflix, Travelers, United Airlines.
WEDNESDAY: The Federal Reserve releases the October beige book, a collection of early and unofficial economic data. Earnings: Melville industrial supplies distributor MSC Industrial, Abbott Labs, Tesla, Verizon.
THURSDAY: September existing-home sales from the National Association of Realtors. In August, existing-home sales fell as inventory decreased and prices rose. Also, jobless benefits claims for the week ended Oct. 16 from the Labor Department. Earnings: American Airlines, AT&T, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Intel, snapchat parent Snap, Southwest Airlines.
FRIDAY: Earnings from American Express and oilfield services provider Schlumberger.
