KEY EVENT: An important week for seniors on Long Island and around the nation. On Wednesday, the Labor Department releases consumer inflation for September. The data is used to calculate next year’s cost-of-living allowance for Social Security recipients. Economists predict the 2022 COLA will be the biggest since 1982.

MONDAY: The Treasury bond market is closed for Columbus Day, but the stock market is open.

TUESDAY: The Labor Department releases the number of available jobs as of the end of August. In July, job openings hit an all-time high.

WEDNESDAY: In addition to updating the nation’s inflation rate, the Labor Department releases consumer prices in the 25 Northeast counties including Long Island. Earnings: BlackRock, Delta Air Lines, JPMorgan Chase.

THURSDAY: The Labor Department releases September producer prices, a look at inflationary pressures at the wholesalers’ level. Also from the Labor Department: jobless benefits claims for the week ended Oct. 9. Earnings: Alcoa, Citigroup, Domino’s Pizza, Morgan Stanley, United Health, Walgreens Boots Alliance.

FRIDAY: The Federal Reserve Bank of New York releases the October Empire State survey, an update on New York manufacturing activity. Also, September retail sales from the Commerce Department. Earnings: PNC Financial.
