Can cloud computing help find a cure for snoring?

CA Technologies is seeking an answer to that question with a $15 million equity investment in the sleep apnea diagnostic company Watermark Medical Inc. of Boca Raton, Fla.

Privately held Watermark makes take-home devices that allow doctors to monitor their patients’ sleep disorders using data collected wirelessly. The data includes blood oxygen, nasal airflow and pulse rate.

Watermark describes its key product as a “wireless physiological recorder worn on the forehead that acquires and stores up to three nights of nocturnal data.”

The devices ease the diagnostic process by allowing patients to be monitored at home, instead of having to overnight at a clinic.

CA Technologies in a Monday news release said the equity investment represents its “entry into the emerging software-as-a-service-based health care.”

As a minority owner CA will have two seats on Watermark’s board of directors.

The service utilizes cloud computing, which refers to flexible, cost-saving subscription plans allowing companies to use — and pay for — variable amounts of data storage, software and other resources over the Internet, as needed.
