CA's focus on cloud computing

At CA Technologies’ convention in Las Vegas this weekend Bill McCracken, chief executive of CA Technologies, said in a speech Sunday that the Islandia-based company will sharpen its focus on cloud computing.

The information technology industry is at a crossroads as the U.S. economy emerges from recession and CA has chosen its direction, McCracken said.

"People still ask if I think the cloud is really going to happen. I say no, I don't think it's going to happen. I know it is going to happen because it is happening now,” McCracken said.

"Running IT in a cloud-connected enterprise will be more like running a supply chain, where organizations can tap into the IT services as needed - specifying when, where and precisely how they are delivered," he said.

Cloud computing refers to flexible, cost-saving subscription plans allowing companies to use – and pay for – variable amounts of data storage, software and other resources over the Internet, as needed.

McCracken also talked about CA Technologies’ latest name change, announced last week. It used be Computer Associates, then CA Inc.

"The name CA Technologies acknowledges our past and points to our future as a leader in delivering the technologies that will revolutionize the way IT powers business agility," said McCracken.

"We are executing on a bold strategy, where IT resources -- from the cloud to the mainframe and everything in between -- are delivered with unprecedented levels of flexibility."
