Moviemaker Ron Howard and Canon USA Inc. are working together to create what Canon calls "the first user-generated photo contest in history to ultimately inspire a Hollywood short film."

The film will be shot with Canon DSLR products.

Canon's interactive, user-participation marketing campaign, titled Long Live Imagination, was launched Sunday when Howard and Canon, based in Lake Success, invited photographers to send their most imaginative photos, based on a series of movie themes.

The film will be titled "Project Imagin8ion". The project's YouTube site welcomes photo submissions and suggestions for the contest. Deadline is June 14.

"The contest and this site will foster dialogue among the community, and directly with Canon, inspiring everyone to new levels of creativity," the company says.

Canon adds that "a visually stunning television commercial that takes place within Ron Howard’s mind’s eye will begin airing" Monday.

So far, there are eight theme suggestions for photos: Setting, Time, Character, Mood, Relationship, Goal, Obstacle and the Unknown.

Howard and Canon will choose one photo from each category, and these eight photos will become the "basis and inspiration" for the short film.
