Canon USA's scanner is not a flatbed

Lake Success-based Canon U.S.A. has taken another step away from what used to be called a flatbed scanner, with an upright, compact device that can scan documents -- such as electrocardiograms and other lengthy items -- as long as 118 inches.

The Compact imageFORMULA DR-C125 uses a faceup, top-feeding and top-ejecting design to result in "a small operational footprint" that can fit on a cart and be wheeled from bed to bed in a hospital or clinic -- or from desk to desk in a government, financial or other office, Canon says.

The scanner is meant to ease the "simple and reliable distribution of information across their businesses," in color, black and white or grayscale, reading double-sided documents in a single pass at speeds up to 25 pages a minute, Canon says in a news release.

It can read thick documents, plastic ID cards, embossed cards and driver's licenses, has a full automatic mode and can seamlessly convert images into PDF or PowerPoint format.

For maximum image quality, the DR-C125 scanner includes image processing features such as background smoothing to improve legibility, auto resolution to automatically adjust the output resolution, auto color detection and shadow cropping.

"It can also improve collaboration by conveniently routing scanned images directly to cloud applications such as Evernote and Microsoft SharePoint," Canon said.

Suggested retail price is $495.
