Capital One said Tuesday it would eliminate all 135 back office jobs at its Mattituck center by the middle of next year as it consolidates functions in Melville and Richmond, Va.

"This was a very difficult decision and one that our banking leaders do not take lightly," the company said in a statement. "This is not a reflection of the associates' performance."

Workers are being offered transfers to other Capital One locations but some might have to relocate off Long Island, in which case they would be eligible for relocation assistance, said company spokesman Stephen Schooff. "I think it's going to be on a case-by-case basis."

The Mattituck center is at 9025 Main Rd.

Schooff said Capital One has 2,000 workers on Long Island, most of them at its 120 branches and some at another back office center in Melville.

Workers affected are in bank operations, information technology and corporate real estate, the company announcement said. The center serves branches around the country, as do the Melville and Richmond centers and others in Plano, Texas, and Laurel, Md.

"The consolidation is being driven by a business decision to simplify our operations and standardize our processes," Schooff said.

Most of the 135 positions will be eliminated by Dec. 4 while a few workers will remain through the second quarter of next year, the company said. It said it will offer the workers on-site career counseling and job search resources.

Based in McLean, Va., Capital One Financial Corp. reported July 13 that its second-quarter profit rose from a year earlier, to $911 million, or $1.97 per share, from $608 million or $1.33 a share in the second quarter of 2010. Last month, Capital One said it would pay $2.6 billion to acquire HSBC's domestic credit card business.
