Long Islanders in need of legal help can meet with representatives from more than a dozen legal and community organizations on Friday at a free event in Central Islip.

Attendees of the event hosted by the Central Islip Civic Council can seek assistance from attorneys on issues such as foreclosure, landlord-tenant disputes, senior benefits, veterans benefits, immigration and family law, said Madeline Mullane, director of pro bono attorney activities at the Nassau County Bar Association.

“We hope we can provide people with a lot of different tools to make informed decisions and have someone assist them for free or at least start guiding them in the right direction,” Mullane said.

The Retreat, a nonprofit serving survivors of domestic violence, will also attend to provide information.

While some attorneys at the event don’t provide legal representation, they can make referrals or advise on whether legal issues are worth pursuing, Mullane said.

The Central Islip Civic Council will also sign people up for its emergency food pantry and provide small bags of food for Long Islanders in need.

The event will take place outside the Central Islip Civic Council at 68 Wheeler Rd., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The rain date is May 31.

Assistance will be available in English, Spanish or Haitian Creole, with additional languages available by request.

Walk-ins are welcome but interested attendees can register to ensure there’s an attorney with expertise in their area of need. Register by emailing probono@nassaubar.org or call 516-666-4857.
