The chief financial officer for Comverse Technology Inc. has resigned his position, effective immediately, the company reported to the federal Securities and Exchange Commission.

The departing executive, Stephen M. Swad, 49, will remain with Comverse until Nov. 9 as special adviser to the chief executive. Manhattan-based Comverse has a major subsidiary, Verint Systems Inc., in Melville.

Before he joined Comverse Swad was chief financial officer of Fannie Mae, the government-sponsored mortgage lender, from May 2007-August 2008; and had previously held the same position at AOL Inc. Before AOL, he had  held top financial positions at Turner Entertainment Group, Time Warner and KMPG LLG.

Comverse did not say whether Swad is moving on to a new position elsewhere. Swad had been chief financial officer at Comverse since May 2009 a director at Verint since June 2009.

Stepping in as interim chief financial officer is Joel Legon, 59, the company's chief accounting officer
