A Plainview company could benefit greatly in coming years from Chinese government subsidies to its domestic LED (light-emitting diode) factories, a news report says.

The company is Veeco Instruments. Its $2.5 million machines are already in use in numerous Chinese factories, churning out low-energy LED lighting chips.

Now, “China wants to step up use of LEDs in new street lighting, factories and other businesses,” Investors Business Daily reports this week.

Veeco said it saw "accelerating demand" in the second quarter from LED companies expanding facilities in China, the report said.

LEDs produce light using far less energy than other sources, such as light bulbs. They are in strong demand already — even without the Chinese streetlight market — by makers of everything from phones to laptops because their low power drain expands battery life.
