Melville-based Comtech Telecommunications Corp. said Monday that one of its units has a new U.S. Army contract to provide support for a satellite-fed battlefield command system.

The contract has a one-year initial term, and if the Army uses its option to renew for two more years, the deal could be worth as much as $80.7 million in revenue, the company said.

The electronic battlefield control system, known as Blue Force Tracking, reduces the possibility of friendly fire casualties.

Maryland-based Comtech Mobile Datacom Corp. will provide "engineering services, program management and satellite network operations on a cost-plus-fixed-fee basis, and hardware, including options for mobile satellite transceivers," the company said.

The contract period began Sunday and will end on March 31, 2013, with two 12-month option periods.

Comtech Mobile Datacom, of Germantown, Md., specializes in satellite-based data communications; and location and messaging services.
