CPI Aerostructures Inc. has received a five-year, $53.5 million logistics contract to supply structural wing components for F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft around the world, the company announced.

CPI Aero, based in Edgewood, will serve as a subcontractor for DLA Aviation of Richmond, Virginia, which secured the prime contract from the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency.

"It's a giant logistics job," CPI Aero chief financial officer Vincent Palazzolo said Tuesday of the contract, which involves no manufacturing. "We're managing the entire supply chain."

The contract, announced Monday, covers more than 1,000 F-16s flown by the U.S. military and nearly 1,900 used by foreign air forces. The contract, which carries an optional 3-year extension, can be canceled at will by the Defense Logistics Agency.

Under the deal, CPI Aero will be the exclusive supplier of 439 structural wing parts used for F-16 repairs or overhauls.

Douglas McCrosson, CPI Aero's chief executive, said the contract was the largest the company had received from the U.S. government in more than a decade.

"With this award, we have gained a footprint on a new platform for us, the F-16, one of the world's most popular military aircraft, with approximately 2,900 aircraft flying in the air forces of 28 nations," he said.

As part of the contract, CPI Aero will manage an inventory distribution site for F-16 wings at the Ogden Air Logistics Center in Ogden, Utah, but logistics management will be done in Edgewood.

CPI Aero makes structural components for civilian and military helicopters and aircraft.
