Credit unions helping hungry

Two hunger relief charities will benefit from a cooperative effort by a dozen credit unions this winter.
The two beneficiaries are Island Harvest and Long Island Cares, Inc.- The Harry Chapin Food Bank.
The effort started this month. Credit union locations are listed at www.licreditunions.org -- and each has receptacles for cash and food. Cash donations are tax deductible. In the past two years this group of credit unions collected nearly five tons of food and $150,000.
The following credit unions will take part:
-- Bethpage Federal Credit Union
-- Island Federal Credit Union
-- Heart Center Federal Credit Union
-- Long Island Realtors Federal Credit Union
-- Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union
-- Nassau Financial Federal Credit Union
-- North Shore LIJ Health System Federal Credit Union
-- People's Alliance Federal Credit Union
-- Sperry Federal Credit Union
-- Teachers Federal Credit Union
-- Town of Hempstead Employees Federal Credit Union
-- Winthrop University Hospital Employees Federal Credit Union
