Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo Friday said New York State must do more to commercialize the inventions of research institutions such as Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Stony Brook University and others.

At the Cold Spring lab, Cuomo praised local efforts to turn research into businesses. “The breadth of your plan has always been impressive,” he said, referring to the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council.

Cuomo said, “Where this state is badly behind” is in commercializing research. “It is key for our state's economy.”

Cuomo is touring the state's 10 regions to assess how state aid awarded last year is helping spur economic growth. He was in Syracuse on Wednesday.
