Cyberhacks surge in third quarter

Suffolk County, which was hit by a debilitating cyberattack in September, is far from the only government or corporate entity victimized by cybercriminals in the third quarter. Check Point Research said the number of cyber incidents targeting organizations in North America rose 47% in the July-September period compared with the third quarter a year ago. A separate report from Surfshark found that 109 million accounts worldwide suffered data breaches in the third quarter.
The most attacked sectors in the third quarter were education institutions followed by local governments and health care companies.
Check Point noted that ransomware attacks — like the one that hit Suffolk — remain the No. 1 threat to organizations because they “cause the greatest disruption.”

The traditional new fall television season — led by the return of the NFL — boosted broadcast TV viewing by 12.4% in September, but streaming was still king. Nielsen says streaming services hit a new record, capturing 37% of all TV viewing, followed by cable (34%) and broadcast (24%). YouTube was the most popular streaming service, followed by Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime.

Verizon enlisted Walmart to sell a pay-as-you-go home wireless internet service for $45 a month. The service, sold under the Straight Talk Home Internet brand, will be exclusively available at Walmart stores.
