DiNapoli: LI lags NYS in job growth

Long Island’s job market fared worse than New York State’s in both the five-year and 10-year periods ended Dec. 31, 2012, according to a report from state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

Employment in Nassau and Suffolk counties shrank three tenths of 1 percent during 2007-12 compared with a statewide gain of seven tenths of 1 percent.

DiNapoli found that the Island lost private-sector jobs while the state added them in the five-year period. Losses in goods-producing industries and government were less locally than statewide, on a percentage basis. But the Island lagged the state in hiring by service-producing industries, he said.

For the 10 years ended Dec. 31, 2012, the job performance in Nassau and Suffolk counties more closely tracked that of New York State: the number of jobs climbed 3.39% and 3.99 percent, respectively.

The Island outperformed the national job market in both timeframes.
