A retired U.S. Navy admiral has agreed to form a “working partnership” with Stony Brook-based Applied DNA Sciences Inc., the company said Tuesday.

Applied DNA said its new partner, Vice Admiral Edward M. Straw, will be working as an independent consultant. The company said its botanical DNA marking technology meshes with Straw's field of expertise, military logistics and supply chains.

Applied DNA has begun to market its botanical DNA markers as a tool for ensuring the integrity and provenance of computer chips and other sensitive national security equipment.

Straw is former director and chief executive of the Defense Department's Defense Logistics Agency, which the company said is “the largest military logistics command supporting the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines).”

“Throughout his career, safeguarding against counterfeit products has been a common goal, but one for which there has not been a definitive solution,” the company said in a news release.
